Background:

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that Canterbury Hospital services a multicultural area. More than half the residents are born in another country. More than half the households speak another language other than English. A significant proportion of people cannot speak any English. Cultural differences and language barriers present multiple challenges to local clinicians. In addition, there are racial differences in risk of minimal trauma hip fractures. We aim to review the ethnic diversity and language spoken in patients presenting to Canterbury Hospital with a low trauma hip fracture. This will give guidance to the resources needed to support local clinicians to provide culturally appropriate care.

Methods:

Retrospective study of all adults who present to Canterbury Hospital Emergency Department with a low trauma hip fracture between January 1st 2018 and December 31st 2019. All data was obtained from electronic medical records.

Results / Conclusions:

There was a total of 156 patients with low trauma hip fracture during this period. Further results and conclusions will be presented on the day.
